navagation using the sunYou can use the shadow cast by a stick during the day to help determine the East/West direction. This is more effective during the middle of the day.

Place a stick around 3 feet tall in the ground as perpendicular as possible (use string and a rock to line it up). Mark the end of the shadow with a rock. Wait 15-30 minutes and place another rock at the end point of the new shadow. A line connecting these two rocks runs approximately East/West.
