Wondrous vistas, huge rooms, soaring cavern walls reflecting every color of the
rainbow, towering formations and columns, delicate crystals that look like flowers,
winding passageways, waterfalls, streams, pools and lakes, speleothem draperies,
massive onyx formations, slender shafts - standing alone or crowded together in
unbelievable profusion...All this and more, can be seen in the show caves listed
in this directory provided by the National Caves Association.
Visitors
feel a thrill of excitement as underground pathways are followed through a cave
or cavern. Every cave is a new, exciting experience. Well informed guides entertain
tours, telling about the history, lore and geologic development of the cave. Many
walkways are almost level, others include stairs and ramps. Some caves are entered
by walking, others by boat or elevator, and at one cave the visitors ride through
on a tram. Because trails follow the natural contours of the cave, visitors
with disabilites might want to inquire about the accessibilty of the caves they
plan to visit. Comfortable walking shoes are suggested and visitors often like
to have a light jacket or sweatshirt with them during their tour through a cave
or cavern, as temperatures can fluctuate. The
following is a state by state list of caves and caverns in the U.S. If you are
interested in them, please contact them directly. Please do not write to us at
Fabulous Travel, as we have no affiliation with any of these organizations.
As we get web site links to these caves, we will add them. Also, if we here at
Fabulous Travel have actually visited the cave, we will give our notes
and feedback about it (only one as of this writing). If you've visited
a cave (and you are not the owner of the attraction and you have no business interest
in its success) and would like to share your notes on the experience, we'd love
to add them to this report. Simply click on this and email cheri@fabuloustravel.com.
Otherwise, click on a state and find a cave! DeSoto

Notes On Moaning Caverns by Cheri Sicard
Moaning Caverns were a great place to visit and they offer something unusualt
that you might not find at other caves. There are tour options in which you can
rappel down to the bottom of the cavern (as opposed to taking the stairs). This
looked like loads of fun and when we were there, an adventurous grandmother in
her early seveties gave it a try and gave the experience a BIG thimbs up! For
the truly adventurous there is an option to tour parts of the cave not opened
to the general public. For this you will don coveralls and a hat with a built
in light and follow your guide through teeny tiny narrow crevices into the heart
of the cave. Not for those with claustrophobia, but for those interested in trying
caving, it can't be beat! Cave
