NEW MEXICO, USA – When I first mentioned to friends that I would be traveling to New Mexico for a week of skiing and snow boarding, most were incredulous that the Land of Enchantment offered any snowy sports opportunities. These folks were stuck in the stereotype of New Mexico as a desert state. While it does offer first class desert adventures, the Southern part of the Rocky Mountains also call New Mexico home, and that my friends, makes for first class skiing and snowboarding.
For the savvy skier, the rest of the world’s apparent ignorance of New Mexico as a great ski destination is a good thing. Lift tickets are far more affordable than their Colorado, California and Utah counterparts and long lift lines are virtually non-existent (with the possible exception of Taos Ski Valley during peak times, even then there’s so much terrain it’s easy to avoid crowds).
From newbies trying skiing or boarding for the first time to experts looking for adventurous new terrain to conquer, New Mexico’s ski resorts offer what you’re looking for. New Mexico is home to eight ski/snowboard mountains in all. The pages below will give you details on four of New Mexico’s most popular ski resorts including what to expect from the resort in addition to where to eat and stay while visiting. If you’re not driving to reach New Mexico’s ski towns, you can fly in to Albuquerque then rent a car. American Airlines also flies into Santa Fe.
