Tulips in Holland, MichignHOLLAND AND GRAND HAVEN, MICHIGAN, USA – Yes, the city of Holland, Michigan offers visitors a respectable number of attractions dedicated to the town’s Dutch heritage. Where else (outside of the Netherlands) can you visit an old time Dutch village, tour an authentic working Dutch windmill (complete with a Dutch certified master miller), watch artisans create wooden shoes and delft style pottery, view a world-class collection of 17th, 18th, and 19th century Dutch art, furniture and artifacts, as well as marvel at acres upon acres of brilliant rainbow hued rolling fields of tulips?   Tulips fans will especially want to visit in May to celebrate the internationally famous tulip festival.  More than 500,000 visitors flock to Holland, Michigan to enjoy the colorful flowers, eat authentic Dutch food, watch Dutch dancing, and otherwise celebrate all things Dutch.

But this area that served as a haven for Dutch immigrants in the mid-1800’s offers today’s travelers much more than a mere glimpse of the Netherlands in America.

You’ll find some of the finest beaches in America and all the water based activities that go along with them. There’s fabulous hiking, biking, fishing and golf. The nearby city of Grand Rapids offers a cosmopolitan experience. And the entire region is served by a surprisingly sophisticated array of great places to eat and drink fabulous foods and creative locally brewed beers.

Downtown Holland displays a mix of old fashioned Mayberry-like charm blended with modern tastes and sensibilities. The area’s two major hotels – the thoroughly modern City Flats Hotel and the Haworth Inn and Conference Center (located on the campus of Hope College) are both within easy walking distance of terrific restaurants, fabulous microbreweries, and lots of intriguing shops.

For those who want to stay closer to the water, nearby Grand Haven offers great camping and RVing on and near the Lake Michigan shore, as well as a variety of small hotels and bed and breakfast inns. Swimming, boating and great fishing awaits. Hiking and biking trails criss-cross the area, giving travelers lots of picturesque places from which to enjoy the views.

The Boathouse, Grand Have, MichiganFor one of the most unique lodging experiences you’ll ever find, check out The Boathouse (pictured right). Once literally a floating house, this unique cottage is now landlocked, albeit right on the edge of Lake Macatawa Harbor and just s short stroll from the sandy beaches of Lake Michigan. With five bedrooms and a sleepy capacity of 14, the Boathouse is perfect for small groups or family reunions. A wrap around deck and enclosed porch make it an idyllic setting to enjoy relaxing views of the harbor. The home comes with everything your family will need for a perfect vacation including a full kitchen, outdoor grill, laundry facilities, cable TV, air conditioning and more. For the Boater, two large slips are provided, directly out front. The Boathouse is available for weekly or monthly rentals.

Holland and Grand Haven are just a 30-40 minutes from Grand Rapids, so it’s easy to take a short drive to enjoy that city’s attractions like the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library, the Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park, and Grand Rapids’ cosmopolitan food, wine, and art scene.
