If your RV journeys will be taking you to the Los Angeles area, we've got an incredible camping spot for you. (Sorry no tent camping here.) Dockweiler State Beach is RVing as close as you can get to the sand, it's freeway, bus and Metrolink close and a great place to stay when visiting the City of Angels or its surrounding westside communities like Santa Monica, Venice, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, etc.

If you carry your bikes with you, this campground sits right beside LA's famous bike path which takes cyclists almost all the way from San Diego to Malibu. If you didn't bring your bike, there are rentals in walking distance (weekends only in winter). It's an easy flat pedal to such nearby tourist areas as Venice Beach, Marina del Rey and Santa Monica Beach.

You can't beat the waterfront view or the ocean sunsets at Dockweiler. There are 82 full hookups sites and 35 spaces without hookups. The campground also offers showers, rest rooms and laundry facilities as well as picnic tables and grills at each space. There's a security patrol from 10:PM o 6 AM.

What's the catch?
Dockweiler is close to LAX airport. While this does give you an awesome view of the planes taking off over the ocean, it can be noisy.

Pets are welcome on leash at the campground but technically not allowed on the beach. That said, this stretch of shoreline isn't usually as crowded as other LA beaches as many Angelenos don't even know of its existence. We have walked Zoey the Wonder Dog, and her late sister Ziggy before her, on this beach many times without incident. (That's a photo of Zoey on the hill overlooking the campground. )

When we have been caught with a dog on the beach, the lifeguards have either ignored us or politely asked us to leave. Be aware they can give you an expensive ticket, but it's never happened to us or anyone we know -- and we live in the area. However, I make no guarantees, use your own judgement before bringing your dog on the beach.

For reservations and more info call 800-950-7275.

Open year round. Take route 105 west or route 405 north or south and exit at Imperial Highway. Go west, when Imperial Highway meets the ocean, you're there!
