Door County Coffee Company, Sturgeon Bay, WisconsinSTURGEON BAY,WISCONSIN, USA – When you think of fine coffee, a lot of locales come to mind – Kona, Sumatra, or any number of other places in the world’s coffee belt (ALL coffee is grown within 1000 miles of the equator between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn). Coffee capitals like Seattle, San Francisco, Paris or Rome might also come to mind. But chances are Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin wasn’t top on your list of coffee hot spots. But it should be, providing you make a stop at the Door County Coffee Company.

Providing a Midwest oasis for those seeking the perfect cup, the aroma of freshly roasting surrounds the building that serves as the Door County Coffee Company’s retail showroom, restaurant, gift shop and coffee roasting facilities. Even if you just happen to be driving by with the windows open, if you’re a coffee lover, just try to resist stopping.

Vicki Wilson, Door County Coffee COmpanyThe folks at the Door County Coffee Company take the subject seriously, and the public in the surrounding areas (along with a strong nationwide internet following) appreciate it. What started in 1993 as a small business venture for mom Vicki Wilson has turned into a huge enterprise that employs 33 people and roasts between two to three thousand pounds of coffee beans each and every day.

Get Vicki talking and you can see why this business has succeeded so impressively. She’s a walking, talking encyclopedia of all things coffee and her enthusiasm is infectious.

They sell over 80 different kinds of coffee at the Door County Coffee Company, all roasted fresh on premises in small batches to exacting specifications.  The beans are the highest grade available from the world’s best suppliers.

If you’re visiting Door County, be sure to stop in and order a coffee tasting flight (that’s right the coffee equivalent of the wine tasting flight you might get in a wine bar) that lets you sample four distinctly different types of coffee and comes accompanied with home baked biscotti.

Much more than just great coffee, the food here – fresh baked goods, soups, salads, sandwiches, and breakfast and lunch entrees -- is all home made and all excellent. Stop in for breakfast or lunch, or anytime for coffee and dessert. They also offer a fabulous high tea, although you’ll need to make reservations at least two days in advance to allow enough time for the staff to prepare all the delectable goodies that go with it. At $12.95 per person (as of this writing in 2009) and including four different types of sandwiches and eight different desserts, the high tea at Door County Coffee Company is a real bargain (four person minimum).

After you’ve eaten, save time to browse the gift shop for gourmet teas and food items, home accessories, and of course coffee accoutrements of all kinds. If you can’t visit, they offer freshly roasted coffee via mail. Fair warning, once you taste this coffee, you’re likely to become a fan and reorder. I personally was never a fan of flavored coffee. I say was because that was before I tried Door County Coffee Company’s Orange Flavored Coffee. Like all of their coffees, it has a rich smooth ,never bitter, flavor that keeps you craving your next cup. In fact, I think it’s time for this writer to go place an order.
