bike_week.jpgDAYTONA BEACH, FLORIDA, USA -- Alright men, listen up.  It’s time to take that $20k + investment in your iron horse out for some exercise and you out for some fun.  Twice every year Daytona Beach, Florida hosts the biggest biker events in the country.  Riders of pocket rockets, choppers, custom cruisers and full dress hogs come together via their love for motorcycles and parties.

When I say parties, I’m not talking about those  teenage, drunken girls gone wild, spring break freak fests of Daytona Beach’s past.  Daytona Beach has grown up a bit and so have we.  That doesn’t mean we can’t make some noise, have some fun and create memories that will last forever. And most importantly ride, ride ride.

If you’re like most people visiting Daytona Beach for Daytona Bike Week in early March or Biktoberfest in October you’ll be staying in one of the many hotels that line the coastline along Florida’s state highway A1A. where you can find economically priced motels, median priced condos, and first class hotels like The Shores that offers all the amenities you’d expect like fine restaurants, beautiful grounds leading out to the ocean, and a full service spa.

Biker Festivities
As you head downtown to the biker festivities you'll smell food cooking outdoors mixed with the rich aromas of suntan lotion and motorcycle exhaust.  Your eyes will bug out of your head as you gawk at the rows upon rows of motorcycles parked up and down the streets, the hundreds of thousands (yes hundreds of thousands) of people all there for one reason, to celebrate the freedom and artistic expression of the motorcycle enthusiast.

From finely airbrushed gas tanks depicting everything from fanciful midevil dragons to dragon flies, brightly colored leather clad road racers aboard their pocket rockets and the best ink (that’s tattoos) to be found anywhere. When you hear the low thumpty thump of an American made harley added to the high pitched whine of Japanese road race machines and mix in the mid range of European Ducauties, BMW’s, and Moto Guzies you’ve got music to your ears.

After you’re finished checking out the booths, bikes, and babes of Bike Week in Daytona Beach, it’s time to saddle up and take a ride to the next festival going on at the worlds largest Harley Davidson dealership at Bruce Rossmeyer’s Destination Daytona just 10 miles down Hwy 1.

This is not your ordinary bike shop. The late Bruce Rossmeyer built a motorcycle compound complete with restaurants, speciality shops, a hotel and even a tattoo parlor. During Bike Week the festival atmosphere here is complete with band stands, food booths and motorcycle exhibits that will appeal to all motorcycle enthusiasts.

More Guy Firendly Stuff To Do in Daytona Beach

kayak.jpgIf all of these assaults to your sense take their toll, take a step back in time and stop by Cracker Creek Canoeing for a leisurely trip down Spruce Creek.  Once you enter the creek in one of steady kayaks or canoes your guide will begin telling you of the rich history of the area combined with details of abundant flora and fauna.

For another relaxing yet manly activity in Daytona Beach stop by Fletcher’s Cigar Bar in Ormond Beach where proprietor Bill Fletcher has created an inviting and casual spot where you can unwind with a fine cigar and snifter and feel like a million bucks.   The staff at Fletcher’s is knowledgeable and approachable and will happily take you on a tour of their walk-in humidor to help you find the smoke that suits your needs, experience and price.  You’ll always find a group of regular guys talking about extraordinary cigars.

Find your way to the bridge at Silver Beach Ave (this turns into Orange Ave) and stop at Jackie Robinson Ballpark, home of the Daytona Cubs Class A baseball team.  This is the park that hosted the 1st racially integrated baseball game.  The field is always open so you may stop in, walk around the field and pay your respects to those that broke down racial barriers.

daytona_bikeweek.jpgWhen the need for speed returns, nothing matches The Daytona International Speedway.  During Bike Week there are activities and races galore as it coincides with Daytona 200 Week with motorcycle races and events held at this historic racetrack.  When at the speedway be sure to check out the Daytona 500 Experience which will immerse you in the lifestyle that is NASCAR.  With interactive activities like race car simulators and pit crew training, you’ll feel ready to join Jr’s team.

For those truly into NASCAR, here’s a restaurant not to be missed.  Get back on your bike and head south to Ponce Inlet to Down The Hatch Seafood Company.  This casual restaurant built on a pier on the intercoastal waterway is one spot during NASCAR races where you will be able to mingle with some of your favorite drivers and crew.  They come for the food but stay for the view, and you will too.

This article has only scratched the surface of things for guys to do and see in Daytona Beach.  As a motorcycle enthusiast,  many of you don’t care what there is to do as the journey is far more important then the destination.  However, in this case you’d be wrong, Other activities include fishing, golfing, poker, dog racing, and water sports of all kinds.
