Author Notes: Split pea soup is a comfort food favorite, but really loses something when it comes out of a can. Here's an easy recipe to make your own split pea soup at home.

Ingredients:
  • 2 cups split peas
  • 4 1/2 cups boiling water
  • 1/2 cup celery, diced
  • 1/2 cup carrots, diced
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons bacon drippings
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions:
  1. Wash peas and add water.
  2. Sauté celery, carrots, and onion together in bacon drippings.
  3. Combine vegetables to peas and water; simmer until peas are soft, about 45 minutes; season to taste.
