For me, there are two or three different gadgets that I just couldn't live without in the kitchen. The first is my Chef's Knife from Wustof. Well balanced and sharp, cooking implement and home defense all in one! Along the same lines is my Ulu. A round, sharp blade that makes crushing and chopping garlic extremely easy, it's also great for cutting things in a pan, like lasagna and baklava. It takes a little getting used to, but once you get it down, chopping is a breeze with just a little rocking motion. Handy as a pastry scraper, too, as long as you're using a surface that you won't damage. Completely indespensible is my kitchen-aid professinal mixer. I can make cake batters, cookie doughs, bread and all sorts of other things without having to get a workout all at the same time. Put on the whisk and get perfectly whipped cream, switch to the paddle and get wonderfully mixed chocolate chocolate chip cookie dough. Put on the bread hook and homemade french bread is a breeze. Finally, I've recently fallen in love with my Cuisinart Griddler. Part press-grill a la George Foreman, part griddle, part pannini press, all handy. The only thing I don't like about it is the tilting motion of the lid when it's opened, but it makes a great moveable surface to cook my cinnamon whole wheat pancakes and bacon on while I do the eggs on the stove. It's good for tuna melts, hot ham & swiss sandwiches, quesadillas, all sorts of stuff. Easy, quick and very very storable. There it is, my list of indespensible kitchen items. Enjoy, and happy cooking!

Being raised by a mother that was reared on a farm it was just natural to learn how to cook.  To this day I am amazed at her ability to stir a batch of cookies to completion with her trusty wooden spoon.  She must be really packing some muscle!  In a high school home-economics class I was mortified at the teacher's use of an electric mixer to complete the task.  :-)  As an adult I have been known to use an electric mixer now and again, but I would definitely be lost without a good wooden spoon.

For day to day meal prep, a complete set of knives is not necessary.  I really only use one or two on a regular basis.  I love my chef's knife.  It's also nice to have a smaller knife, the size up from a paring knife.  However, I would be just fine if all I had was a good chef's knife.

Finally, one good metal spatula is a wonderful tool in the kitchen.  It is useful both in baking and cooking.  I use only cast iron and steel cookware, so I prefer a good metal spatula.

As you can tell, I'm a real down to basics home cook.  A good wooden spoon, my trusty chef's knife, and a versatile metal spatula is all I need to get breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert on the table.

My garlic press I use garlic in alot of my cooking. I don't like to chop or dice the garlic that fine. I would be lost without it.

I LOVE this thing. it's a braun model that comes with a blending pitcher that gives much better results than my actual blender. or you can use the handheld blender to puree soups and other things that you don't want to take out of the pot, put in the blender, blend, and then put back in the pot. whoever invented this is a genius. i use it to chop nuts, make smoothees, creamed soups.... i can't remember the last time i used my regular blender.

The two things I would not want to do without are my digital meat thermometer, no more over or under cooked meat and the grinder I use for fresh ground pepper. If I added one more thing it would be a VERY sharp chefs knife.

Even though I am not eligible to enter for the prize, I will get this discussion rolling.

I love my mico-planer -- this handy grater makes instant work out of normally tedious tasks like grating citrus zest, nutmeg, hard cheese (like Parmesan) or even chocolate.  I use this tool constantly.

I would also find it had to live without a food processor - again normally tedious work only takes seconds with a food processor.  I even use it to make bread and pizza doughs, in addition to the standard chopping duties.

So come on Fabulous Foodies.  Tell us about your favorite gadget before December 31st 2008 (midnight Pacific time) and be eligible to win this month;s prize package giveaway.
