SUPERIOR, WISCONSIN -- If spreading a picnic blanket in view of a sparking waterfall sounds good, Amnicon Falls in Superior, Wisconsin, may be an ideal destination for the camping enthusiast. Picnic areas on both sides of the root beer-colored Amnicon River offer views of the falls, rapids, and cascades. The river gets its unique hue from the tannic acid produced by decaying vegetation at the river's headwaters.
Tables and grills are provided in the picnic area. Primitive camping is available at 36 campsites.
Perched on ancient lava beds dating back more than 1 billion years, the park also contains a playground, self-guided nature trail, and more than 75 bird species. An historic footbridge, one of seven remaining, takes visitors to an island standing where the river divides.
