The full moon parties of Koh Phangan are legendary. Actually the half moon parties and black moon parties are pretty popular too. Apparently everyone gets excited by that lunar pie in the sky, whether it’s shining in the sky or hidden away from view, everybody gets out to celebrate and howl at the moon.

The original full-moon party began in the late 80’s when a small group of friends and travelers got together to have a small soirée and dance on the beach. The big, bright full moon reflecting off the water provided enough light to see (and stumble) their way around. The parties were small and generally included a ghetto blaster (remember those?), a guitar, some beer and maybe a small campfire. The monthly parties grew via word-of-mouth and since then have morphed into a huge monthly event, known around the world and attracting 10,000-30,000 party-goers every month!

Each month as the gleaming full moon starts its ascent over the pearly white sands of Haad Rin Beach, the crowds begin to filter onto the shore. Haad Rin’s crescent-shaped beach comes alive as people begin their all night dance fest. The beach is lined with bars and DJ’s blasting a variety of music; techno, trance, hip-hop, reggae, the list is extensive.

The Koh Phangan monthly moon gala has become a way-station for travelers through Asia. Everyone’s itinerary seems to include at least one stop for the monthly beach bash. Travelers from around the world mingle, eat, drink and dance until dawn. Lately the parties have become even more grand; taking on a carnival-like atmosphere with performances by fire-eaters, jugglers and of course the ubiquitous impromptu Asian fireworks display.

The party ends when the sun begins to rise and those who haven’t passed out on the beach, slowly stumble back to their beds. Resting up and getting ready for the next lunar cycle.

If you’re staying at one of the local Haad Rin Hotels or if you’ve arrived via ferry from Samui, specifically for the party, admission is generally free. If you’ve chosen to stay elsewhere on the island, it’s usually 100-200 baht per person, supposedly to support the after party cleanup. The age range of those that hit the beach usually suits the 20-30 year-old crowd, typically those exploring the world just out of school or those taking a break from their new job.

Drinks and food are everywhere on the beach. As with any Thai party, Singha, Chang and Sang Som will be readily available as well as fruit juices and energy drinks. Food is everywhere and ranges from the typical Thai to a big pizza pie.

The full moon parties have been raging for over 20 years and as long as there is a moon in sky and sand on the beach, it looks like travelers will flock to Koh Phangan for a drink, a dance and a cheer for that magical white orb in the Thai night sky.
