CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE, USA -- This quaint area of Chattanooga is a great place to spend an afternoon, an evening or even makes a great place to stay. The Arts district is home to several charming Bed and Breakfast hotels, fabulous restaurants and of course, art galleries and museums, all overlooking the scenic Tennessee river. Take a stroll through the sculpture garden before heading to one of the area's specialty restaurants. On site bakeries and herb gardens let you know everything is fresh and homemade -- even the pasta at Tony P's shop and restaurant.
Rembrandt's Coffee House is the ultimate Chattanooga spot for coffee and mouth-watering desserts and candies. Foodies will also want to check out the schedule of demonstrations and classes (I learned how to make whole grain bread during my visit, click for recipe).
Also in the district is the Hunter Museum of American Art, a beautiful mansion filled with one of the most important collections of American art in the Southeast. Fans of antique china, furniture and especially glass will not want to miss the Houston Museum, which houses an amazing collection, all the more amazing because it was accumulated by one person, the fascinating and eccentric Ann Safley Houston. A woman of modest means, Houston struggled and sacrificed to acquire the thousands of pieces in her priceless collection, at one point opting to live with her antiques in a barn rather than give them up. One of the largest and finest glass collections in the world, the history of Anna Houston herself is as much an attraction as the beautiful things she left behind.
