Navigation - Directions from the Sun's Shadow
By Robert C. Etheredge

You can use your wristwatch as a reverse sundial to help determine South. For digital watches, you will have to picture what a regular watch would look like. This method works in the Northern Hemisphere:

1. Hold your watch parallel to the ground and point the hour hand at the sun (Note: for Daylight Savings Time, subtract one hour from the displayed time to approximate sun time.)

2. With the hour hand pointing at the sun, the direction South will be halfway between the hour hand and 12:00 on your watch. This is approximate and will not account for your longitude which makes clock time differ from sun time.
