la super ricaSANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA, USA -- La Super Rica Taqueria is the kind of place you'd drive right past...if nobody had told you about the culinary treasures lurking within.  The small unassuming taco stand looks like nothing special from the outside.  If you happened to drive by when it was closed, you'd never guess that hordes of loyal La Super Rica fans wait in long lines every day to get tacos there (rumor has it the late Julia Child, who had a home in Santa Barbara was a regular).

For at least 12 years now  I have made a side trip to the restaurant any and every time I found myself driving through Santa Barbara (and since I lived in Los Angeles and love road trips, that was reasonably often).  It's not that far, just a couple of miles off the 101 freeway at Milpas Street, and well worth going much farther out of your way for.

So what's so special about la Super Rica?  For one thing, all the torillas (corn are made fresh, right in front of your eyes, right before your order is filled.  Homemade tortillas just don't get any fresher than that.  All food is cooked fresh to order.  While there are a large variety of meat tacos and other dishes, vegetarian will find enough fare to please here too.  Of course, there's a respectable selection of homemade salsas so you can add the perfect amount of heat.

You won't find anything fancy here -- just authentic Mexican tacos, expertly prepared, for an incredibly modest price.  Bring cash as they don't take credit cards.
