Ski Red River, New MexicoRED RIVER, NEW MEXICO, USA – “We are serious about having fun here in Red River!”

So said Tim House, owner of the Lift House Bar and Grill at the base of the Red River Ski Area mountain. During my short stay in this charming little old fashioned town and its resident ski area, I came to know and understand that it’s true. There’s a special laid back friendly vibe in Red River that’s hard to find at the more bustling modern resorts.

In the tiny one-street town that lies at the base of the ski area you’ll fund hotels, vacation condo rentals, restaurants and bars. In fact, there are four bars in this small one-horse town -- I told you they are serious about fun -- all within easy walking distance of each other, local lodgings, and the ski resort. In fact, the aforementioned Lift House Bar and Grill is one of the town’s hot spots. Offering their own signature microbrew (Tim House’s Lift House Lager), good burgers and casual fare, a full bar and a fabulous view of the action on the slopes it’s the Red River place to be, especially on Saturday nights when a torchlight parade of skiers winds its way down the main slope.

The ski area itself reminded me of the now defunct Massachusetts mountain where I first learned to ski as a young child. I later learned that Red River’s owner also originally hailed from the Bay State and modeled his New Mexico resort after his favorite New England ski haunts. The similarity ends on the slopes – New Mexico ski runs are far superior to any I remember when growing up, and far longer too.

Red River has enough varied terrain to keep everyone in your party happy, fifty seven trails in all (30% Expert, 38% Intermediate, 32% Beginner). Three double chairs, three triple chairs, and one surface tow keep everything moving. I visited on a Saturday after one of the biggest snowfalls of the year and there were no lift lines and my fellow skiers and boarders were sparse, making it one of the most peaceful ski experiences ever.

Texas red's Steakhouse and Loast love Saloon, Red River, NMRed River’s scenery is also some of New Mexico’s most spectacular. The view from the top of the mountain of the tiny town below is reminiscent of a Thomas Kinkade painting. Luckily when you venture into the town there’s more action than is likely to be founding Kinkade’s world. Live music is likely to spill out the doors of any one of the town's four watering spots on any given night.  Don’t miss a stop at Texas Red’s Steakhouse and the Lost Love Saloon, housed in a historic building that, like so many in old west towns, once held a brothel. Today the music coming from the bar still never stops, but the walls are adorned with the owner’s classic guitar collection and busy wait staff hustle to feed throngs of hungry diners -- no hanky panky.

Across the street from the Lift House Bar and Grill you’ll find a small Italian restaurant that doesn’t look like much from the outside. Don’t be fooled. Inside you’ll find and warm and inviting family run place. The food served at Capos Corner is hearty, delicious, and affordable. Enjoy pastas, pizzas and Italian entrees here and be sure to save room for cannoli.

The town of Red River, in easy walking distance of the ski area and everything else in town, offers lots of lodging opportunities from small rustic cabins, to vacation homes and condos to hotels. A good middle of the road choice, right at the base of the slopes and offering nice amenities like a hot tub and large screen televisions, is the Best Western River’s Edge Lodge.

I love taking my ski holidays in small out of the way places like this. For me half the fun is off the slopes, especially if I can take a quiet cross-country trek through calm natural areas and not worry about being run down by enthusiasts charging by trying to make some sort of time-record.
