Holland State RV ParkHOLLAND, and GRAND HAVEN MICHIGAN, USA – Sure there’s a lot to do and see in and around Holland, Michigan, but the campground facilities here – both state parks and private campgrounds – offer so much, RVers will be tempted to never leave their confines.

All of the area's campgrounds take advantage of, in way or another, one of the area’s greatest attractions – the Lake Michigan shoreline.

State Park Campgrounds

Lake Macatawa campground, michiganHolland State RV Park (pictured above) offers 100 sites will full hookups. The campground itself – nothing more than a paved lot really – sits just steps from the sandy beach. And while the view at your site isn’t all that picturesque, you only need to cross a dune to get expansive waterfront vistas in one direction and the Holland Harbor Lighthouse, AKA “Big Red” (built in 1873) in the other.  There’s great fishing off the pier (especially walleye), as well as swimming at one of the best beaches around.

Lake Macatawa campground, michiganJust down the street you’ll find the Lake Macatawa Campground. This is a gorgeous tree shaded campground offering tent and RV camping, and while it’s not as close to the sand as the Holland State RV Park, it’s still mighty close. This park offers electrical hookups only.

Commercial Campgrounds

oak grove RV resortWant to go bit more upscale? Make a reservation at the 9 ½ acre Oak Grove RV Resort, located adjacent to the 100 mile bike path that runs along the shoreline.

The resort offers a heated pool, hot tub, convenience store (with a well stocked vintage candy counter for kids of all ages), individual shower rooms, a HUGE laundry room, and lots of public areas all in a beautifully landscaped park setting.  In addition to RV spaces with full hookups they also rental RVs and camping cabins.

Oak Gorve RV Resort, Grand Haven, MIOak Grove is a friendly place run by two generations of the VandenBerg family. It’s easy to socialize with other campers if you choose, and special activities go on all the time, yet it’s also an easy place to just get away and relax too.

If you’re lucky you’ll happen to be there when Betty Vandenberg bakes a batch of sticky rolls (she says it doesn’t happen often, so don’t expect this). She had just taken some out of the oven when we visited, and even though everyone in my group had just finished an enormous lunch, we all managed to wolf down a couple of these delectable treats. When I asked Betty for the recipe, she kind of looked at me sheepishly and said “I’ll give it to you, but you may not want, it’s really easy.”

Oak Grove RV Resort, Holland, MichiganBetty sent the recipe, and she was right, it was easy. She came up with it while doing volunteer disaster relief work where she had to feed crews of hungry workers quickly and easily. While it is not normally the type of recipe we would publish at FabulousFoods.com (we are monor food snobs after all), I am eating my words, cause the final result of these cinnamon rolls are exceptional. Check out Betty’s recipe for Pecan Caramel Rolls here.

While I wasn’t personally able to check out the Yogi Bear Jellystone Park in nearby Grand Haven, RVing friends did. They reported a beautiful park with lots of new renovations and upgrades and kid appealing activities. Also located near the Lake Michigan shore, Jellystone offers large shaded campsite or camping cabins in a wooded setting. There’s great hiking and biking nearby, along with fishing and other lake activities. Park amenities include a heated pool and kiddie pool, miniature golf, arcade, go-karts, basketball, shuffleboard, horseshoes, laundry facilities, and free wireless internet. There are lots of special events and activities like arts and crafts and live entertainment, so check out their website for more details. Be sure to also look into special themed weekends and promotions.
