SEVIERVILLE, TENNESSEE, USA -- Rock City Barns, emblazoned with “See Rock City,” were once prolific roadside advertisements but are no longer as visible as they once were. The diversion of traffic to interstates and major highways has routed traffic away from the scenic country drives along which many Rock City barns can be found. But visitors can rediscover three of them on U.S. 411 while visiting Sevierville, Tennessee, in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains next to Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg.
As of 2008, around 82 of the vintage landmarks remain. Of these remaining barns, three are still active in Sevierville, Tennessee. The first of the three remaining barns is located less than two miles from the entrance to Forbidden Caverns on Newport Highway (U.S. 411). It was built in the late 1950s and has been painted by Rock City since 1971.
The second is on the Chapman Highway portion of U.S. 411. When owners Susie and Gunter Pole purchased the land in 1998, it was overgrown with weeds and trees and needed to be cleared badly. While cutting the overgrowth, they found the barn. Little did they know it was a Rock City Barn. Following their discovery, they did some research on the barn and found that it was built in the mid-1930s by the original owner Jessie Flynn. Now having owned the barn for eight years, Susie comments, “We are so proud to be the owners of this barn. I feel as though my husband and I own a piece of Sevierville’s history.”
Gunter also states, “We have many people throughout the year who stop by and ask for a picture of the barn. People drop by when we’re outside cutting grass and ask if it’s okay. It’s fine by us as long as they don’t trespass.”
The third barn is located off of U.S. 441 right beside Garner Hollow Way. Owner Ruth Clark comments, “My father built it sometime between 1948 and 1949. I was very happy that Rock City wanted to paint our barn. It is always nice to see a piece of history preserved.”
Today, other advertising vehicles such as television commercials and the internet spread the "See Rock City" message, but the barns are what most people fondly recall when they think about seeing Rock City.
Practicalities
Tips- Do not trespass! If you do, you can be prosecuted by the owners. Also, some owners have electric fences and gates up, so be sure to ask permission before attempting to enter onto private property.
- Remember all barns are visible from the roadside. It is recommended
to take photos from the roadside because owners could be hard pressed
for time to allow visitors onto their property.
