SEVIERVILLE, TENNESSEE, USA – Families vacationing in the Smoky Mountain tourist hot spots of Sevierville, Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg looking for a fun evening activity should consider indulging in the great American pastime, baseball.
The Tennessee Smokies, a AA Professional Baseball team managed by former Chicago Cub and Baseball Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg (pictured right), play in their new state-of-the-art stadium in Sevierville throughout the spring and summer (but even when the team is away look for concerts and other special events at the venue). The Smokies attract talent and provide lots of action. Besides their stellar manager, other Smokies who have reached the big leagues include Dan Uggla, Yabiero Molina and Rick Ankiel.
This a smaller, more intimate baseball game than can be had at the big leagues and offers an old time Americana experience in the midst of modern day America. There’s not a bad seat in the house. Tickets, along with the hot dogs, beer, soft drinks and other ballpark treats are cheap, making this an affordable way for a group to spend an evening while having tons of fun.
The night I visited I observed a crowd that was fairly equally divided among age groups. Sometimes three or four generations of single family could be seen laughing together, root, root rooting for the home team, and having a wholesome family baseball bonding session.
I quizzed twenty-something fan Ryan McBee, who has been coming to the ballpark with his parents for years, about what it is he likes about Smokies Baseball. “I love that it’s not a big city park but a small town experience,” he said. “Plus look at this setting!”
He was right. Smokies stadium is tucked into gentle rolling hills that provide panoramic views of green beyond its walls. At that moment the sunset was painting the sky behind those hills a brilliant array of oranges, reds and purples, but in front the bright stadium lights illuminated the quintessential American summer scene.
Between the crack of the bat, the interactive melodies of the organ, and the smell of popcorn and hot dogs permeating the warm summer air, you could truly "feel the presence of the youth of a thousand summers" in the air (to borrow a phrase from the brilliant Van Morrison).
