DOOR COUNTY, WISCONSIN, USA -- Money Magazine named Door County, Wisconsin “one of the top 10 vacation destinations in America.” So as I headed off to explore this 75-mile long picturesque peninsula on Lake Michigan, I felt more than a little surprised I hadn’t heard of Door County before. After visiting, I felt as though I must have been hiding under a rock to be so out of touch. Over 2 million visitors swarm to Door County each year where they find lots to see and do for every member of the family.
With over 300 miles of scenic shoreline, Door County offers a wealth of water-based recreation including over 30 public sandy swimming beaches, sailing, boating, fishing charters, and a unique car ferry ride to Washington Island. Lighthouse lovers will find ten fine specimens to explore “in the Door” along with a delightful lighthouse themed inn where they can spend the night. With Lake Michigan to the north and east, and the bay (as opposed to the city) of Green Bay to the west, Door County is believed to have more shoreline within its borders than any other United States county.
Five state parks and over a dozen county parks offer fantastic hiking, biking and nature tourism opportunities. Despite development pressure of recent decades, nearly 90% of Door County’s and remains undeveloped.
Those who enjoy a more leisurely pace will enjoy Door County’s many galleries and unique shops.
Foodies (or anyone else who happens to be hungry) won’t want to miss an authentic Door County Fish Boil – a spectacular regional culinary tradition that only happens here. Door County also boasts over 2000 acres of cherry orchards, making it one of the top cherry producing regions in the country. You’ll find an unbelievable array of cherry products stocking the shelves of stores everywhere you look. A growing grape industry also thrives, including five local wineries.
A wonderful way to get an overview of what Door County has to offer, or to explore a certain aspect of it in detail, is to jump aboard one Door County Trolley’s many tours (in winter they offer sleigh tours). You’ll explore the Door from a comfortable warm seat in a cute trolley piloted by an experienced driver/guide who can help add more depth and detail to your Door County experience. For a fun afternoon or evening, check out Door County Trolley’s specialty progressive dinner tours, winery tours, lighthouse tours, ghost tours, and more.
Something to Do and See Year Round
Roughly two-thirds of Door County’s tourists visit between the beginning of May and the end of October. I visited in the dead of winter, about a week before Christmas. Sure some attractions were closed. Others like the famous sandy beaches were rendered impractical due to the frigid temperatures (although over 750 Door County residents and visitors, members of the Jacksonport Polar Bear Club make the plunge into Lake Michigan’s icy waters every January 1st). Still there was a lot to see and do, and it was nice not having to fight crowds. Even this close to December 25th, we had a relaxing time.
That said, I hope to visit again in warmer weather to explore more, as there is far too much to see and do here for just one trip.
